7 Signs You May Need a New Water Heater

We are often asked should I repair or replace my water heater.  When do you know if it is time to get a new one?  There are several signs that indicate it may be time to replace your water heater. Here are some common indicators:

1.  Age: Water heaters have an average lifespan of around 8 to 12 years, depending on the type and maintenance. If your water heater is approaching or exceeding this age range, it's a good idea to start considering a replacement, even if it seems to be functioning properly.  If you are not sure how old your unit is, you can check the unit for paperwork or the label on the front.  Often there is a Build Date on the label or based on the manufacturer, you can determine the age of the unit from the serial number.

2. Inadequate Hot Water: If you notice a decrease in the amount of hot water or if it takes longer for the water to heat up, it could be a sign that your water heater is losing its efficiency or experiencing a malfunction. Sediment buildup or a failing heating element can affect the water heater's performance.

3. Rusty Water: If you see rusty or discolored water coming out of your faucets, it could be an indication of corrosion inside the water heater tank. Rusty water is a sign that the tank is deteriorating and may start leaking soon.

4. Leaks or Water Damage: Any visible signs of water leakage around the water heater or pooling of water near the unit should be taken seriously. Leaks can lead to significant water damage, so it's important to address them promptly.

5. Strange Noises: Unusual noises, such as popping, rumbling, or banging sounds coming from the water heater, can indicate a buildup of sediment or mineral deposits. This can reduce the efficiency of the unit and potentially cause damage if left untreated.

6. Increased Energy Bills: If you notice a sudden and unexplained increase in your energy bills, it could be due to an inefficient water heater. As water heaters age, they tend to lose their efficiency and consume more energy to heat the water.

7. Frequent Repairs: If you find yourself frequently calling for repairs or experiencing recurring issues with your water heater, it may be more cost-effective to replace the unit rather than continue to invest in repairs.

When considering replacing your water heater, it's essential to consult a professional. They can assess the condition of your current unit, recommend the appropriate replacement options, and ensure proper installation. Remember to consider factors such as the size, energy efficiency, and type (e.g., tankless, storage tank) of the new water heater to meet your specific needs and preferences.  If you are located in or near the Lafayette Louisiana area, check out Quinn’s Home Improvement at WWW.QHILLC.COM or call/text (337) 282-0280.  We have extensive experience in repairing and replacing water heaters and we would love to hear from you.
