Should I Resurface or Replace My Countertops?

At Quinn’s Home Improvement, our customers often ask us if they should resurface or replace their countertops. We always respond with “it depends on multiple factors” including:

Do you plan to sell the property in the near future?

      Is the current configuration acceptable?

Are you looking to only upgrade the  countertops or are you interested in new fixtures as well?

These are just a few of the questions that need to be addressed before making the final decision.  To make the choice a little easier, we have created a list of pros and cons for both choices for a homeowner to consider.

Resurfacing Countertops:

Pros:

1. Cost-effective: Resurfacing countertops is generally more affordable than completely replacing them. It can save you a significant amount of money, especially if you have a large countertop area.

2. Time-efficient: Resurfacing is typically a quicker process than replacing countertops. It involves applying a new layer of material or refinishing the existing surface, which can be done relatively quickly.

3. Minimal disruption: Since resurfacing doesn't require removing the existing countertops, it causes minimal disruption to your kitchen or bathroom. You can continue using the space during the resurfacing process.

 Cons:

1. Limited options: Resurfacing may limit your choices when it comes to materials and designs. You will be working with the existing countertop surface, so the range of available finishes, colors, and patterns might be more limited compared to a complete replacement.  In addition, you are severely limited in the changes you can make to existing plumbing fixtures including sinks, faucets etc.

2. Surface durability: While resurfacing can restore the appearance of your countertops, the underlying surface may not be as durable as a new countertop. Over time, the resurfaced layer might show signs of wear and tear, especially in high-traffic areas.

3. Inability to fix structural issues: If your existing countertops have structural issues, such as cracks, deep stains, or water damage, resurfacing might not be the best solution. These problems could resurface over time and require further repairs or replacements.

Replacing Countertops:

Pros:

1. Wide range of options: Replacing countertops allows you to choose from a wide variety of materials, finishes, colors, and designs. You have the flexibility to select a countertop that matches your aesthetic preferences and functional needs.

2. Enhanced durability: New countertops offer improved durability and longevity. They are less likely to develop issues such as cracks, chips, or stains that commonly occur with older surfaces.

3. Increased home value: Investing in new countertops can boost the overall value of your home. High-quality, aesthetically pleasing countertops can be an attractive selling point if you decide to put your property on the market.

 Cons:

1. Higher cost: Replacing countertops is generally more expensive than resurfacing them. The cost can vary depending on the material chosen, size of the countertop area, and any additional customization or installation requirements including new plumbing fixtures.

2. Longer installation time: Installing new countertops involves more extensive work, including removal of the old countertops, potential plumbing adjustments, and installation of the new surface. This process can take longer and may require you to temporarily suspend kitchen or bathroom usage.

3. Disruption to daily life: Replacing countertops can cause more disruption to your daily routine compared to resurfacing. You may need to temporarily relocate kitchen essentials, deal with dust and debris, and adjust your cooking or cleaning routines during the installation process.

Ultimately, the decision between resurfacing and replacing countertops depends on your specific needs, budget, and the condition of your existing countertops. Assessing these factors will help you make an informed choice that suits your preferences and circumstances.  It's always advisable to seek professional assistance when planning and remodeling a kitchen or bathroom.  If you are located in or near the Lafayette Louisiana area, check out Quinn’s Home Improvement at WWW.QHILLC.COM or call/text (337) 282-0280.  We have extensive experience in remodels and we would love to hear from you.
